Professor Les Field, Chairman BSc, PhD, DSc (Syd) – Chairman

Professor Field joined the Board in April 2005, following his appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) of UNSW. Professor Field is responsible for driving the strategic research direction and overall research performance of the University. He is charged with maintaining and advancing the University's profile in research and research training and with the commercialisation of UNSW world class research through NSi


Professor Graham Davies BSc, PhD, DSc, CEng, FIET, FInstP, FIOM3, FREng

Graham Davies is the Dean of Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He has held senior posts in academia at the University of Birmingham and corporately as director in charge of British Telecom's Corporate Research.


Professor Denis Wakefield DSc, MD, MBBS(HonsI), FRACP, FRCPA, FFSc

Professor Wakefield graduated from UNSW with First Class Honours and the University Medal for Medicine. He has dual specialist qualifications in internal medicine (FRACP) and pathology (FRCPA) (immunology). He is Director of the Centre for Immunology and head of Immunopathology with the South Eastern Area Health Service. He was Head of the School of Pathology for ten years before becoming foundation professor of the School of Medical Sciences at the UNSW. He was appointed Associate Dean (Research) and Director of Medical Research in October 2007.


Professor Merlin Crossley - B.Sc. (Hons HI) University of Melbourne

Merlin Crossley is the Dean of Science at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in genetics and microbiology, but also receiving academic awards for classical languages. After a year as a tutor in residence at Queen’s College, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and carried out his doctorate at Oxford University. He received Magdalen College’s Edward Chapman research award for this work. Following a post-doctoral period in Oxford he took a research position at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Children’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School.


Mr Jonathan Blakeman, BCom, Dip (LGA) Auck., Masters in Public Policy Well.

Jonathan Blakeman is the Executive Director, Finance and Operations at the University of New South Wales. His key responsibilities include Finance, IT, Facilities Management and Risk Management. Prior to this appointment Jonathan held the position of Director of Administration at the University of Auckland covering similar portfolios.


Mr Mark Bethwaite, BE, MBldgSc, MBA, FAIM, (appointed 1 January 2007)

Mr Bethwaite is a professional director with experience in three Chief Executive roles, two in major Australian public companies and also for Australian Business Limited.


Dr. Colin Sutton BSc, PhD, FAICD

Dr Sutton has extensive international experience in commercialising medical technology. He was appointed Managing Director and CEO of Ventracor Limited in 2003. Before joining Ventracor, he was CEO of SIRTeX Medical Limited.

Mr Bethwaite and Dr Sutton are independent of UNSW.
