Taking advantage of extensive US university commercialisation experience, Jim is responsible for the commercialisation of all life science projects at UNSW from the Science, Engineering and Medical Faculties. In addition to his role at NSi, Jim also sits on the Uniseed Biotechnology Investment Committee. Uniseed is a pre-seed and seed stage venture capital firm supported by the Universities of New South Wales, Queensland and Melbourne and also Westscheme, Western Australia's largest non-government superannuation fund. Jim is Vice-Chair (Sydney) of Knowledge Commercialisation Australia, the peak body representing organisations and individuals associated with knowledge transfer from Australia's public sector. Prior to joining NSi, Jim established his experience in university technology commercialisation with two US universities, most recently as a Licensing Officer in the Office of Technology Management at the University of California, San Francisco. UCSF is ranked 9th worldwide by Newsweek International, and the OTM itself ranked as one of the top five technology transfer offices in a 2006 study by the Milkien Institute. Graham’s qualifications include Masters’ degrees in Science (Physics) and Commerce (Finance) and diplomas in finance and accounting. He held a Monbusho research at Kyoto University, Japan and is a Fellow of Finsia, an associate of ASCPA and has twenty years' experience in Investment Banking having worked for Deutsche Bank and the Commonwealth Bank. Graham is responsible for the commercialisation of physical science and ICT projects at NSi and has negotiated licence agreements for Catei software and Egows projects. Athena joined NSi in October 2008 as a Business Development Associate in the Physical Sciences and Engineering area. She has held client-facing roles in government and private sector organisations – as a business development manger, radiation training facilitator and a consultant at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. In his role as Business Development Manager, Neil is responsible for the commercialisation of photovoltaic developed at UNSW. This is an area where UNSW has world-recognised leading edge technology. Neil is a UNSW graduate of Engineering, Science and has an MBA from the AGSM. He joined NewSouth Innovations (formerly Unisearch) in November 2004 as a Senior Business Development Manager in the area of Physical Sciences and Engineering. Robin has a background in Materials Science and spent the early part of his career as a metallurgist in the Zambian Copper industry followed by 10 years of research into the development of advanced precious metal alloys for demanding applications. For the past 20 years he has held senior consulting roles with a variety of international organisations in Europe and Australia including PA Consulting, Arthur D Little, Price Waterhouse Technology and Michael Johnson & Associates. Robin has many years technology management experience ranging from assisting large, complex organisations with technology acquisitions and divestments through to advising start-up enterprises on commercialisation strategy. Laura’s position as a Business Development Manager is co-funded with UNSW’s Faculty of Medicine to manage and enhance the commercialisation of research out of the Faculty. Prior to joining NSi, Laura worked in the area of regulatory affairs in clinical trial management. Laura’s competencies and experience span basic medical research, clinical research, project management, client relationship management and business development in the academic, private and contract research sectors. Laura graduated with a B.Sc (Honours) in Physiology and Pharmacology in 1995 from UNSW. Laura obtained her Doctorate from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and UNSW in 1999 and has more than 13 years experience in biomedical and clinical research, specialising in cell biology and transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Laura’s qualifications include a Master of Business and Technology (UNSW, 2006). Her primary interest is the management of emerging technology. Alfredo graduated with a B.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering (minor in artificial organ design) in 1986 from Louisiana Tech University (USA). He has more than 16 years experience in biomedical research in Venezuela, the United States, and Australia covering design of artificial organs, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular physiology, membrane transport, and oxygen transport to tissue. In 1995 Alfredo moved to Australia and joined the Cooperative Research Centre for Cardiac Technology (CRC-CT); obtaining his Doctorate from the University of Technology, Sydney in 1999, and completing his post-doctoral training with the Faculty of Engineering in 2003. Alfredo's main areas of interest are sustainable funding for science, entrepreneurship, innovation, project management in science and business development (all part of a number of submissions to the State and Commonwealth governments). Peter brings a wealth of competencies spanning project management, business development and account management in the industrial biotechnology, biopharmaceutical and food (fmcg) sectors. His industrial experience includes stints with Webster’s, Burns Philp and Agrana. In Singapore he managed several biotechnology-based projects for the Institute of Molecular Agrobiology (IMA) and Temasek Life Science Laboratory (TLL).
