General Manager - Commercialisation – Physical Sciences and ICT

Alan oversees the commercialisation of all physical sciences and ICT projects across UNSW. He has over 15 years experience in all aspects of commercialisation process.

In the UK, Alan grew his own company through to acquisition by the US market leader. In the US he was responsible for international product management and marketing for a medium size US software company. In Australia he created the Asia Pacific division of a US company, establishing direct and reseller channels across the region. Alan is a Director of a number of UK and Australian technology start-ups. Alan has an MBA from Trinity College, Dublin and has a passion for Guinness.

Jim Henderson, PhD

General Manager –Commercialisation – Life Sciences.

Jim is responsible for the commercialisation of all life science projects at UNSW from the Science, Engineering and Medical Faculties.

Prior to joining NSi, Jim spent over 4 years as a Licensing Officer in the Office of Technology Management at the University of California, San Francisco, an institution ranked 9th worldwide by Newsweek International. The OTM itself ranked as one of the top five technology transfer offices in a study by the Milkien Institute. While at the OTM, Jim was responsible for managing a portfolio of over 200 distinct inventions, and he led financial and legal negotiations on more than 40 licenses, including six with start-up companies.

Prior to joining UCSF, Jim spent two years as a postdoctoral licensing agent in the University of Utah Technology Transfer Office. While at Utah, he managed a large life science portfolio and negotiated a number of agreements including licenses to two start-up companies.

Steve Brodie BEng, PhD

Senior Business Development Manager – Physical Sciences and Engineering

Steve is a Materials Scientist by training, with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering and a Doctorate in the field of advanced electronic ceramics. He has worked in the area of research, innovation and commercialisation for over 15 years, in both industry and academic environments. His research, and management, experience includes extended periods as a visiting scientist with four European Research institutions in France, Denmark, Switzerland and Spain. In Australia, whilst working in BHP’s Corporate Research Laboratories, he developed a wide range of Materials Science related innovations and a company-wide innovation system. Since 2000, Steve has applied his industry acquired knowledge of research, creativity and innovation to the commercialisation of ideas in Academic environments.

Neil Simpson, B.E, B.Sc, MBA

Senior Business Development Manager – Photovoltaics & Physical Sciences

In his role as Business Development Manager, Neil is responsible for the commercialisation of photovoltaic developed at UNSW. This is an area where UNSW has world-recognised leading edge technology.

Neil is a UNSW graduate of Engineering, Science and has an MBA from the AGSM. He joined NewSouth Innovations (formerly Unisearch) in November 2004 as a Senior Business Development Manager in the area of Physical Sciences and Engineering. Before joining NewSouth Innovations, Neil worked internationally as a manager for several large companies including ABB, Westinghouse Electric and Siemens.

Robin Stanley, B.Met, PhD, MIMM, CEng

Senior Business Development Manager - Physical Sciences & Engineering

Robin has a background in Materials Science and spent the early part of his career as a metallurgist in the Zambian Copper industry followed by 10 years of research into the development of advanced precious metal alloys for demanding applications. For the past 20 years he has held senior consulting roles with a variety of international organisations in Europe and Australia including PA Consulting, Arthur D Little, Price Waterhouse Technology and Michael Johnson & Associates. Robin has many years technology management experience ranging from assisting large, complex organisations with technology acquisitions and divestments through to advising start-up enterprises on commercialisation strategy. More recently, he served as Technical Director for a listed, high technology company.

Laura Issa, BSc (Hon I) PhD MBT

Business Development Manager – Faculty of Medicine

Laura’s position as a Business Development Manager is co-funded with UNSW’s Faculty of Medicine to manage and enhance the commercialisation of research out of the Faculty.

Prior to joining NSi, Laura worked in the area of regulatory affairs in clinical trial management. Laura’s competencies and experience span basic medical research, clinical research, project management, client relationship management and business development in the academic, private and contract research sectors. Laura graduated with a B.Sc (Honours) in Physiology and Pharmacology in 1995 from UNSW. Laura obtained her Doctorate from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and UNSW in 1999 and has more than 13 years experience in biomedical and clinical research, specialising in cell biology and transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Laura’s qualifications include a Master of Business and Technology (UNSW, 2006). Her primary interest is the management of emerging technology. Laura is an active member of the NSW Branch of AusBiotech.

Alfredo Martinez-Coll, B.Sc.(Biomedical Engineering) PhD

Business Development Manager – Biomedical Sciences

Alfredo graduated with a B.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering (minor in artificial organ design) in 1986 from Louisiana Tech University (USA). He has more than 16 years experience in biomedical research in Venezuela, the United States, and Australia covering design of artificial organs, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular physiology, membrane transport, and oxygen transport to tissue. In 1995 Alfredo moved to Australia and joined the Cooperative Research Centre for Cardiac Technology (CRC-CT); obtaining his Doctorate from the University of Technology, Sydney in 1999, and completing his post-doctoral training with the Faculty of Engineering in 2003. Alfredo's main areas of interest are sustainable funding for science, entrepreneurship, innovation, project management in science and business development (all part of a number of submissions to the State and Commonwealth governments). Following a practical training scholarship in technology transfer and commercialisation in The Netherlands, Alfredo worked in the area of intellectual property and commercialisation across a number of Area Health Services in NSW from 2004-2006 before joining NSI.

Peter Milic, B. Sc (Hons.), MBA

Business Development Manager - Biotechnology

Peter brings a wealth of competencies spanning project management, business development and account management in the industrial biotechnology, biopharmaceutical and food (fmcg) sectors. His industrial experience includes stints with Webster’s, Burns Philp and Agrana. In Singapore he managed several biotechnology-based projects for the Institute of Molecular Agrobiology (IMA) and Temasek Life Science Laboratory (TLL). Peter has a successful track record in bringing new product to market and has provided consultation services to statutory authorities and industry.
