UNSW student start-up wins Pitching Contest at the NSW Pearcy Awards

Last night at the Parliament House Theatre, the NSW Pearcy Awards were held to celebrate innovation in the ICT Industry within NSW.

This was the first time a “Pitching Contest” has been included in the Awards Night, involving 8 university student teams pitching for 3 minutes in front of a room of ICT professionals.

 UNSW student start-up Sunapse won first place in the competition, Luke Marshal and Samuel Killin leading the pack of pitching students from universities including the University of Sydney and University of Wollongong.

Luke and Sam received a prize of $2,000 and more importantly exposure to the wealth of high level people from the ICT industry in the audience.

In the key note speech delivered by Deputy Premier, the Hon Andrew Stoner, Sunapse were mentioned as being innovative in one of the priority areas for NSW and Australia.

Other UNSW student participants included Patrick Chu, a Psychology student who pitched a social media concept related to travel called “Transport Social” and four housemates who created the concept for “foodinger”.

Chen Wang from Foodinger commented, “I think the highlight of the night for me was being laughed at during the middle of the pitch when I hadn't made a joke only to know that two highly reputable entrepreneurs (Liesl Capper and Robert Yearsley) love the idea so much they wanted to offer their knowledge and experience to get the idea up and running!”

Judging the competition were big names in the Australian entrepreneurial ecosystem: Matt Barrie, CEO of Freelancer.com, Paul Hoff, Director of Technology Transfer at NICTA, Hamish Hawthorn, CEO at ATP Innovations and Peter Huynh, Lead Principal, Optus-Innov8 Seed Program 

It has been an exciting few weeks for the students who had recently been taken along to TiECON Sydney, pitched at the UNSW CIE run PitchFe$t and had a final practice session with NSi and CIE staff at the Innovators Brown Bag Lunch session this week.
