Industry Training Using Virtual Reality

The dangerous nature of industries like mining, construction, policing and the military make it difficult to adequately train staff in a realistic environment. Most training methods are both costly and inadequate.

The solution developed by UNSW provides a virtual version of the dangerous environment. This removes the risks and costs of training people in the dangerous real world by immersing the trainees in a highly realistic three dimensional virtual world.

The UNSW solution combines interactive computer game style training modules with highly immersive audio / visual environments, known as the AVIE and the iDOME.

NSi is seeking companies interested in purchasing the solutions for training purposes, or companies interested in selling and supporting these solutions to specific geographical and/or industry sectors. Similarly, NSi is interested in working with industry partners that require UNSW to custom build interactive virtual reality training modules for their specific industry situations.

QuickClinical – Information Retrieval System

QuickClinical (QC) is a highly customisable online information retrieval system designed as a decision-making support tool. An advanced search technology, QC works by applying an intelligent search interface and process layer over the top of generic search engines.

QC can be a standalone product or integrated into software packages to provide an improved information retrieval facility. The potential markets for the technology are publishers, library systems vendors, knowledge management software vendors, information aggregators and trade associations.

It is reported that 350 people die each week in hospitals due to clinician error, often as a result of poor decision making. QC, designed with this in mind, increases information retrieval accuracy by 20% and speed to answer by 50%. The medical decision support market alone is estimated to be $330 million annually.

QC currently has two licensees and NewSouth Innovations is looking for further licensees in other fields and territories.

Wireless Network Security – Less is More

The Location Enabled Wireless Security System (LESS) provides perimeter security for wireless networks. It is designed to stop intruders using mobile devices such as laptops, mobile telephones and PDA’s from accessing a wireless network when they are outside a defined area.

In the office-based Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) environment, security concerns are a significant deterrent to deployment and use. LESS reduces the threat for LAN’s and for providers of military wireless networks and mobile e-commerce services. There is significant opportunity for LESS with the wireless security market estimated to be worth US$8 billion/yr by 2008, with US$350 of this for WLAN security solutions.

LESS offers significant benefits over existing systems by using two independent positioning techniques and applying advanced risk assessment methodologies. NewSouth Innovations is seeking collaborators and licensees to develop and deploy the technology.
