ROSDI technology featured on ABC New Inventors show

inventors on ABC New Inventors show

A technology which allow farmers to irrigate crops with brackish (saline) water was featured on this weeks episode of the ABC TVs The New Inventors (May 11 2011). Against stiff competition the technology won the show and will now be in the running to be named as the "Invention of the Year."

The inventors, Greg Leslie from UNSW and Bruce Sutton formerly with the University of Sydney, combined reverse osmosis membrane technology (which reduces salt concentrations in water) with sub-surface drip irrigation technology to produce ROSDI (Reverse Osmosis Drip Irrigation).  The breakthrough came when the pair were able to demonstrate that the growing plants themselves could extract water through the underground membranes without expensive pumping infrastructure. This breakthrough will enable agriculturalists to reduce, and better manage, water consumption during irrigation and will also open up new land masses for agricultural use. Particularly those that were affected by brackish water.

NewSouth Innovations, UNSWs technology commercialisation company, is commercialising the technology with the inventors and congratulates the pair on their win.
