For UNSW Staff

NSi manages the intellectual property of UNSW and provides support to UNSWs staff in commercialising their research.

We have responsibility for managing the Universitys patent portfolio and negotiate all agreements around commercialisation on behalf of UNSW.

We work closely with researchers to help identify, develop and capture value from their intellectual property. We licence IP to third parties or create vlue through the establishment of spin-off companies for products that can be sold as stand alone products.

Intellectual Property (IP) is the property of your mind or intellect. It can be an invention, trade mark, original design or the practical application of a good idea. In business terms, this means your proprietary knowledge.

At the University when we talk about IP, it is typically new research or a novel idea that may possibly be turned into a product or some type of commercially viable venture.

It does not matter if your research or development is at a very early stage or if you are unsure of its commercial value long term, the first step is to speak to the Business Development Manager who looks after your Faculty, School or Research Centre.

The commercialisation process with Ni starts with the completion of an Intellectual Property Notification Form (IPN). NSi has two versions of the IPN Form; one dedicated for software developments and one for all other technologies;

If you would like assistance in completing the full IPN forms, or have any question in relation to the forms, then please feel free to complete and submit a "One Page Notification of Intellectual Property Development" form outlining the invention you wish to discuss. On receipt of a "One Page Notification of Intellectual Property Development" form a Business Development Manager will contact you to assist you with the notification process.

Please note that the full IPN form must be signed by all inventors, contributors and your Head of School. The commercialisation process is a collaborative one between the inventor and an NSi Business Development Manager who will be involved throughout this process.

Please post your completed form through to NSi at the following address; FAO: GMs Commercialisation; NewSouth Innovations, Rupert Myers Building, UNSW Sydney, NSW 2052.
The spilt of profits generated from the commercialisation of intellectual property reflects that this work has taken place at UNSW, using university resources, including those of NSi. It also recognises the involvement of individuals and provides for future research funds.

NSi work within the bound of UNSWs Intellectual Property Policy.
