Your Mission ... should you choose to accept it ... is to invent solutions to one of 5 critical missions.

If you are a member of staff, or a currently enrolled student, at UNSW then here is a great competition for you! A chance to win $2000 in cash too.

All you need to do is provide a solution (invention), or beginnings of a good solution, to solve one of the following 5 missions (problems).

  1. Mission 1: ORGAN MOTION TRACKING
  2. Mission 2: ADJUSTMENT OF CLOUD RESOURCES TO CLIENT GAMING ENVIRONMENTS
  3. Mission 3: TECHNOLOGIES TO IMPROVE THE RELIABILITY AND OPERATING LIFE OF DATA STORAGE DEVICES
  4. Mission 4: RECYCLING OF CARBON FIBER-REINFORCED POLYMERS (CFRPS)
  5. Mission 5: UNDERGROUND COAL GASIFICATION
Details of each mission are here: Mission Pack

Feel free to invent solutions to one or more of these individual missions. Anyone from across campus can solve any mission!

All inventions will be in the running to win the best new invention (in response to an intelelctual ventures challenge) A $2000 prize will be awarded to the best invention received.

Only genuine inventions will be considered eligible; i.e. those that are novel (new to the world) and actually do provide the elements of a solution. Inventions must be the inventor's individual novel work.

Inventions will be judged on the following criteria;

  • Technical Innovation - is this a significant improvement or incremental?
  • Time To Market - a product could be made in a 5-10 year time frame
  • Likelihood of Adoption - the likelihood that this invention will be widely utilized by the market
  • Literature - how different is the invention to the published literature?
These missions each represents a global problem which, if solved, could lead to significant benefits to community and potentially to commercial rewards.

The Mission Pack outlines the problems to solve and the current state of the art.

How to get your hands on a Mission Pack

Detailed descriptions of each of the missions are provided in a secret Mission Pack - located here:Mission Pack

To get hold of the full details of each mission please email Mission Director Dr Steve Brodie at s.brodie@nsinnovations.com.au.

How to submit a solution

You need to complete an Intellectual Property Notification form for each new invention.

Download form here

Note in regards to timing - Your Head of School will need to sign the invention notification form prior to submission, so please leave time for this to happen.

How detailed do my invention forms need to be?

You will need to provide a clear, easy to read description of your invention and the problem it solves. Please provide documentary evidence appropriate diagrams to support your invention claims. Clearly reference other inventors work whenever necessary.

Tips and Tricks

Carefully study the Mission Packs. These are detailed documents which clearly define the "problem" to solve and outline the current status of
the industry.

Before submitting an invention please make sure it is novel. Conduct a web search and basic patent searches. Google is you friend!

Once you have a good sense of the problem take time to think and explore potential solutions - a good idea is to "Sleep on it".

The Mission Possible II Invention Challenge is open to current staff and students at the University of New South Wales.

Inventions must be the inventor's individual novel (new to the world) work which has been created in response to this competition.

Inventions will be judged by Intellectual Ventures, and NewSouth Innovations staff members, using the following four criteria areas:

  1. Technical Innovation - is this a significant improvement or incremental?
  2. Time To Market - a product could be made in a 5-10 year time frame
  3. Likelihood of Adoption - the likelihood that this invention will be widely utilized by the market
  4. Literature - how different is the invention to the published literature?
The judge's decision is final.

As part of the judging process, your invention will be reviewed for its commercial potential and may subsequently be commercialised by NSi or Intellectual Ventures. As per the UNSW IP Policy you will receive a share of the net returns, received by NSi as a result of the commercialisation of your invention. In addition, if your invention is selected for commercialisation by Intellectual Ventures you may be eligible to receive an upfront payment from IV for your invention. So, by taking part in this competition you agree to these conditions.
